Approximately 700,000 to 900,000 Americans are currently infected with HIV. With 40,000 new infections each year, that is one new infection every 13 minutes.

Worldwide, 35 million people have been infected and 5 million have developed AIDS.

1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV infection and 1 in 5 are unaware of their infection.

Injection drug users represented 9% of new HIV infections in 2009, down from 17% of those living with HIV in 2008.
